i element

If you don't know what an element is or how you must use it, I recommend you read the "HTML tags and attributes" tutorial that you can find in the HTML tutorials section.

Description

The i element represents text in an alternate voice or mood, or offset from the normal prose. This element may be used to markup taxonomic designations, technical terms, idiomatic phrases from another language, transliterations, thoughts, or ship names in Western texts.

Authors are encouraged to resort to other more appropriate elements in certain situations, like when there's a need to mark a term with stress emphasis (em) or when defining a term (dfn).

Examples

In the first example, we have the description of a plant where its taxonomic designation, and that of its family, are properly wrapped with the i element.

<p><i>Lactuca sativa</i> is a member of the <i>Lactuca</i> (lettuce) genus and the Asteraceae (sunflower or aster) family.</p>

Lactuca sativa is a member of the Lactuca (lettuce) genus and the Asteraceae (sunflower or aster) family.

Now, the i element is used to mark the names of two ships, the "Nautilus" and the "Abraham Lincoln".

<p>They were a French professor, his servant, and a Canadian fisherman. These three men had been hurled overboard by a collision which had taken place between the <i>Nautilus</i> and the United States frigate <i>Abraham Lincoln</i>, which had chased her.</p>

In the next example, a transliteration of the greek word "Ελευθερία" is marked with the i element.

<p>After all these years, the activist group is still claiming for their <i>Eleutheria</i>, but their voices are no more than an eco lost in history...</p>

The following example shows a piece of text where the technical term "bluetooth" is marked with the i element.

<p>You can connect the devices using <i>bluetooth</i> and transfer the files once the link is set up.</p>

You can connect the devices using bluetooth and transfer the files once the link is set up.

Lastly, an example of the i element marking up a thought.

<p>I instantly thought <i>Are you kidding me?</i>, but I had no choice but remain silent...</p>
