small element

If you don't know what an element is or how you must use it, I recommend you read the "HTML tags and attributes" tutorial that you can find in the HTML tutorials section.

Description

The small element represents side comments, regularly used as small print for disclaimers, caveats, legal notices or restrictions, copyright statements or attributions. Accordingly, browsers use to render text inside this element with a smaller font size.

This element was a candidate for removal in previous versions of the standard because of its presentational past. HTML5 gave it a meaning by making it represent side comments.

The small element is designed for small runs of text. Authors should avoid using it for blocks of content consisting of, for example, multiple paragraphs or lists.

Examples

The following example shows a legal notice about the agreement between the user and the website. This is a very common example, and you may be used to find this type of statements in documents around the web.

<h1>LibreOffice</h1>
<p>LibreOffice is a free and open source office suite, developed by The Document Foundation. It was forked from OpenOffice.org in 2010, which was an open-sourced version of the earlier StarOffice. The LibreOffice suite comprises programs to do word processing, spreadsheets, slideshows, diagrams and drawings, maintain databases, and compose mathematical formulae.</p>

The second example consists of a product review. The small element is used to mark up a legend that claims that batteries are not included in the package.

<h1>LED flashlight</h1>
<h2>Product description</h2>

<li>More than 200 hours of lighting by using high quality batteries <small>(batteries are not included)</small>.</li>
<li>Suitable for camping, searching, home, engineering, etc.</li>
